The sailing section of the CUS Bologna was officially founded in 1997 as the 19th competitive section following two major experiences in 1996: the participation in La Rochelle at the Course Croisiere Hedec and the victory in Anzio of the only university sailing event in Italy at that time, the Athenaum Cup.
Today the sailing section is part of the international sporting circuit of sailing, and is itself FIV affiliated with its own athletes, including non-university members; it is present in federal regattas as well as in World Championships in a selection of sailing classes. It has its own sailing school and, in synergy with the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the Alma Mater, collaborates with the project "051 Challenge" which provides for the participation in the event “Mille e una Vela” Cup, a regatta reserved for representatives of the universities with boats designed and built by students.
