The 79th edition of the Spring National University Championships, hosted by CUS Piemonte. The opening ceremony was also attended by the head of FederCUSI, Antonio Dima, who was recently in Bologna for the elections of the new governing bodies of CUS Bologna. More than three thousand students are competing across various venues in Piedmont, many of whom will be representing the Alma Mater Studiorum.
Following an excellent opening day, four more medals have been won: one gold, two silver and one bronze. The gold came from judo, courtesy of Sofia Bragagni. Giada Likaj took silver in sabre, as did Claudia Barbeitos, also in judo. Bronze went to the men’s judo team. Fabio Fabbroni, head of judo, is pleased with his athletes’ performance. “I can only say I’m satisfied; we’re returning from Vercelli with eight medals, one more than last year. Second in the men’s standings and third in the women’s.
But above all, we fielded 15 athletes from 8 different clubs, a positive result of the collaboration established with the coaches and the athletes’ home clubs. And I’d like to thank them for their trust. Just a touch of sadness at what I consider the end of a cycle. Because several key athletes from our recent successful seasons will be leaving as their studies have come to an end. We’ll work to build a new cycle.”
“I’m really pleased with how it went,” says gold medallist Sofia Bragagni. “I had a bit of a slow start, but then I found my rhythm and everything went well.”
Paolo Landuzzi comments on the wrestling competition. “A well-organised event with good attendance and a high standard of athletes. It has grown steadily over the years. Our lads stood out for their great commitment and strong motivation, despite some recent injuries which, for a few, limited their performance. First place in the team Greco-Roman event is a splendid result. Unfortunately, in freestyle we weren’t very lucky, but we finished eleventh out of 22 teams. We did, however, take home one gold, one silver and one bronze, as well as many fifth places. Congratulations to the whole team.” In judo, the team comprised Gregorio Callegati, Davide Casadio, Federico Cassanelli, Leonardo Cittadini, Giacomo Lodi, Alex Boldini, Mattia Castellani, Erik Sangiorgi, Francesco Ceraso, Riccardo Bertoli and Gianmarco Coppari. In the women’s events, meanwhile, Michela Cicchetti, Sara Buracchi, Sofia Bragagni, Claudia Barbeitos and Domitilla Caprara. In fencing: Giada Likaj, Michele Minarini and Federico Zanni. In tennis: Andrea Belardinelli, Irem Balbay and Nefeli Ppali.
