The EUSA European University Championships have got off to the best possible start for the University of Bologna. In Salerno, Unibo (the women’s volleyball team) defeated Oslo with a convincing 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-11, 25-6). The CUS Bologna women will now play on Sunday at 12 noon against the Turkish side from Yasar University and on Monday against the Czech team from Masaryk University. Coach Leonardo Palladino is pleased. “The first match,” he says, “is usually the hardest because of the nerves. The girls did brilliantly to get into the right frame of mind straight away.”
Tea Reggiani, the middle blocker studying Economics who scored 10 points, was also delighted. “I was a bit nervous at the start,” she admits, “partly because we haven’t trained much together, for obvious reasons. We need to improve, that’s clear. But we’re on the right track.”
Lucia Mercolini, who is studying Medicine, takes on the playmaking role as setter. “We’re a new team. We need to get used to each other. But we’re very happy because we played as a unit. And now full steam ahead. We hope to carry this form into the next matches, which will be even more important.”

Tomorrow will be a day dedicated to table tennis. The men’s team will play against Zamojski University from Poland and then, on Sunday, against the University of Ljubljana. The women’s team, meanwhile, will face the University of Pécs (Hungary) today and, on Sunday, Vilnius University (Lithuania) followed by the Wrocław University of Economics and Business (Poland).
