In tennis, CUS Bologna’s weekend brought mixed results: the D3 team bowed out of the championship in the semi-finals, losing to TC Reggiolo, whilst the D4 team finished the group stage unbeaten and qualified for the promotion play-offs.
The D3 team suffered a home defeat against TC Reggiolo, seeing their chances of reaching the promotion final slip away. The team went into the match with several key absences: Masetti was unavailable, whilst Lavalle and Girotti were not in peak condition. Mattia Chiarelli and Mario Pontieri took to the court for the singles matches.
Chiarelli put up a hard-fought battle but was unable to find the right response against a high-calibre opponent. Pontieri, meanwhile, lost the first set, took a break lead in the second but failed to capitalise on it, eventually losing the second set 6-3. With the doubles match not played as the result was already decided, the final score was 2-0 to Reggiolo.
It was nonetheless a positive season for CUS Bologna, who fell just short of the promotion final.
A convincing victory for the D4 team, who beat Porretta Terme 3-0 to finish top of the group without having lost a single match.
Dario Varano won his singles match 6-2, 6-0, whilst Andrea Paolucci did the same 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles, Varano, paired with Piergiovanni Ricci, sealed the victory with a straightforward 6-2, 6-0 win.
CUS Bologna D4 now progresses to the promotion play-offs as group winners.
