The University of Bologna continues its winning streak; with another victory tomorrow, it will finish the EUSA European University Championships in Salerno in ninth place. It’s almost a shame, considering that, following their opening-day defeat to Freiburg, the girls from the Alma Mater Studiorum have won every women’s basketball match since.
Against Charles University, too, it was no contest: the final score was 79–48 (quarter scores: 17–15; 38–24; 62–39). Tomorrow, at 2 pm, they face Eötvös Loránd University in their final match of the tournament.
Coach Jordan Losi offers his analysis, looking ahead. “I don’t want to sound repetitive, but that’s the way it is. The girls gave it their all and played with energy. The result was never in doubt; we gave the younger players a chance to play, partly with the future in mind. We need to look ahead. We’ll finish with one more match because, regardless of our final placing, I’ve always seen the right attitude from the girls.”
Sofia Tartarini has no doubts. “We played a solid match, focusing on ourselves rather than our opponents because the technical and physical gap was significant. Now we’ve got another match like this coming up and we won’t take it lightly.”
Elena Melloni echoes her team-mate’s sentiments. “We tried to keep our concentration high even though we knew it was a match well within our reach. We tried out some tactics and scenarios with a view to next year and tried to stay as focused as possible to show our true worth, despite our position in the table this year. Tomorrow we have our final match and, even though we’re left with a bitter taste in our mouths, we’ll put up a good fight.”
