The bond between the Alma Mater and youth sports is growing stronger thanks to the major school events organized by CUS Bologna. The highlight of this season is the Rookie Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, the largest Italian event dedicated to this sport in the school system. Organized to promote the core values of sports, the event involves more than 4,500 high school students each year, with approximately 800 participating athletes—both boys and girls—in this edition. Specifically, the (sports) education projects promoted by CUS Bologna engage over 15,000 students from schools in Bologna and its province annually, through activities focused on basketball, indoor hockey, volleyball, and Ultimate Frisbee.
The games are traditionally held in Bologna, at the Terrapieno sports complex, and represent the highlight of the sports education programs promoted by CUS Bologna. Every year, over 100 qualified coaches and graduates in Sports Science visit schools to work with student groups, helping to foster a culture based on participation, respect, and personal growth.
The Rookie Ultimate Tournament marks the conclusion of a program that spans the entire school year and includes student leagues, curricular activities, and in-school tournaments, organized in collaboration with the Provincial School Office of Bologna. The project brings thousands of middle and high school students onto the field. Schools compete in dedicated divisions, including teams in the Mixed category.
Among the most popular events are the Olympics organized by Istituto Comprensivo 8, which in past years have involved over 70 children from 35 classes in the city’s elementary schools; this year’s event will take place on May 21 at the Ravone field. The tournament’s success demonstrates how sports can serve as an educational tool that combines competition, inclusion, and personal growth, engaging thousands of students.
At the conclusion of the Rookie Tournament, the Mixed category was won by Class 3C from Da Vinci High School, followed by Class 4ATM from Giordano Bruno High School and Class 5P from Salvemini High School. In the Open category, Class 5BIN from Aldini High School took first place, followed by Class 5BMM from the same school and Class 4AFM from Giordano Bruno High School.
The awards ceremony was attended by Roberta Li Calzi, Bologna City Councilor for Sports, and Federico Panieri, General Director of CUS Bologna.
