It was well known that the University of Bologna did not deserve to be competing for places 9 to 12 at the EUSA European University Championships in women’s basketball, scheduled to take place in Salerno. Jordan Losi’s team paid dearly for their opening-day defeat against Freiburg. However, against the Dutch side from Maastricht University, it was no contest. The match ended 84–31 (12–9; 43–16; 60–18). In the third quarter, immediately after the half-time break, the red-and-white defence conceded just two points to the Dutch side.
Regret is growing, but once again Coach Jordan Losi’s analysis is clear-headed and spot-on. “Well done to the girls for reading today’s game well and finding a way to keep our tournament going. We won’t hide the fact that our expectations were different. We now face the group stage for ninth to twelfth place and we want to give it our all right to the end. It’s a good lesson in humility, knowing that we have to start afresh. We know we have a heavy burden to bear. We’re here for ourselves and for the University of Bologna. We’re here, enjoying this wonderful experience, because they’ve given us the opportunity to play and to do so to the best of our ability. That’s why the only way we can say thank you is by giving it our all. Even if this group doesn’t belong in our history.” And tomorrow, at 10 am, we face Charles University from the Czech Republic.
