Those… forehands from CUS Bologna. It’s worth mentioning because, in tennis, the Alma Mater Studiorum has bagged a haul of medals, with two golds and two bronzes significantly boosting CUS Bologna’s medal tally as the team competes in the Eastern Piedmont National University Championships over the next few days.
Vittoria Modesti secured the first bronze medal in the women’s singles, losing to the CUS Torino player. Vittoria herself, however, teamed up with Clara Sansoni to get her revenge against CUS Torino, winning the women’s doubles. There was also a medal in the singles, thanks to Nicola Ravaioli, who beat CUS Milano. Ravaioli himself then, paired with Andrea Valli, secured another bronze in the third-place play-off against CUS Genova. The technical director of the tennis section, Alessandro Vitti, was delighted.
“This CNU tournament was wonderful, even more so for the spirit with which the lads approached and experienced this week than for the medals. As for the men’s singles, gold went to Ravaioli, who played an exceptional tournament, culminating in his semi-final victory over the number 2 seed Comino, a player of the very highest calibre. Bronze in the men’s doubles went to Ravaioli and Valli, who were stopped not so much by their opponents as by Ravaioli’s exertions in the singles. As for the women’s tournament, bronze went to Vittoria Modesti in the singles, who was defeated after an excellent match against the tournament winner, a player of the very highest calibre (ranked 500th in the world). Gold, however, went to Modesti herself and her partner Clara Sansoni, who managed to beat the Cus Torino pair in the final, a team that included the singles winner.”
And now it’s time for karate with Gabriele Abbruscato, Edoardo Maria Di Mauro, Matteo Guandalini and Francesco Pignatti. In taekwondo, meanwhile, the spotlight is on Diego Gessaroli, Laila Harti, Linda Cecchi, Allegra Grassi, Hristina Miljkovic, Gaia Colucci and Joy Fructuoso.
In the final days of the CNU championships, as is tradition, all eyes are on athletics – the very discipline from which Margherita Mezzetti, the current president of CUS Bologna, emerged. In the 100m hurdles, Alice Cecchini takes to the track, whilst Sofia Bedeschi, Filippo Paganelli and Giuseppe Kiteso Kasuku compete in the 100m. Then Luca Marsicovetere (400m), Riccardo Sintoni (1500m), Angelo Fania (shot put), Linda Bertaccini (triple jump) and the 4x100m relay team (Filippo Paganelli, Giuseppe Kiteso Kasuku, Luca Marsicovetere and Giorgio Marfella).
