Dual Career Project

Recognition of "student-athlete" status

The University of Bologna offers top-level athletes the "dual-career" programme – "student-athlete" status – in order to allow them to combine their university studies with a career in competitive sports, allowing them to obtain a level of education that prepares them for a sound professional career, also after retiring as athletes.

Recipients

You can apply for recognition as a "student-athlete" if:

  • you have enrolled for a degree programme at the University of Bologna;
  • if you meet any of the requirements listed below:
    a) if you were summoned for the preparation of the Summer or Winter Olympics/Paralympics in the 12 months before submitting the application;
    b) if you were summoned on at least one occasion to the national teams of National Sports Federations (FSN) or Associated Sport Disciplines (DSA) of the CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) or CIP (Italian Paralympic Committee) in the 12 months before submitting the application;
    c) if you have been formally recognised as an athlete of "national interest" by the FSN/DSA of the CONI/CIP;
    d) for individual sports, if you rank in the top 32 of the overall national ranking or youth ranking of the FSN/DSA of the CONI/CIP at the time of application;
    e) for team sports, if at the time of submission of the application you are participating in the top championship organised by the relevant National Sports Federations/Associated Sport Disciplines; for team sports linked to National Sports Federations that have activated a professional sector, participation in the championship immediately below the top division is also considered valid.
  • If you are a member of the FSN/DSA of the CONI/CIP.

Benefits of the "student-athlete" status

If you obtain “student-athlete” status, you are entitled:

  • to agree ad hoc exam dates with teachers and, if necessary, even take the exam via Skype. For this to be possible, students must contact the teacher at least 7 days before the exam date and explain the reasons why they cannot sit the exam on the scheduled date, in order to allow the teacher to find an alternative date, even if not within the exam session;
  • at the end of your degree programme, request a diploma supplement that will accompany your degree, certifying the specific nature of your dual career (in the preparation phase);
  • free accommodation for short periods in the student residences managed by ER.GO., if available;
  • support from an educational tutor who will help you choose curricula and internships, considering potential professional activities following retirement from your sporting career; support from a student tutor who will help you to stay up to date about study programmes, course units and exam dates, as well as maintain contact with various offices.

In exchange for these benefits, the University may ask you to commit to competing in a number of national and international university competitions, in agreement with the Sports Department of CUSB-Unibo, and to be actively involved in activities aimed at promoting university sports and the Alma Mater-Cusb teams’ by attending agreed and scheduled celebratory events.
